- Bakit laging tumatawa ang baliw?
Bakit laging lumuluha ang baliw?
Bakit laging sumisigaw ang baliw?
Bakit laging bumubulong ang baliw?
Kahit walang tugtog, sumasayaw siya.
Kahit walang kausap, nagsasalita siya.
Kahit hindi gabi, nagbibilang ng bituin.
Kahit walang tono, gumagawa ng awitin.
II
Bakit tayo nagsasaya tuwing pasko?
Bakit tayo nalulungkot sa sementeryo?
Bakit tayo nagagalit sa kalaban?
Bakit tayo nagmamahal ng kaibigan?
Kay sarap umindak sa maingay na tugtugan.
Kay sarap ngumiti kapag nagbibingi-bingihan.
Kay sarap sumakay sa isang eroplano.
Kay sarap turuang umawit ang loro.
III
Sabi ng isang makatang tuliro,
Baliw daw ang mundo at lahat ng tao...
Magaling nga lamang magdala ang ilan
Kaya't hindi pansin itong kabaliwan.
Kaya tayo tumatawa at lumuluha.
Kaya tayo nagsasaya at nalulungkot.
Kaya tayo sumisigaw at bumubulong.
kaya tayo nagagalit at nagmamahal.
Baliw kasi tayo.
Hiya
Nahihiya ako sa tuwing
May isdang lumalangoy...
Ako na nalulunod
Sa mabilis na agos
Ng mga panaghoy.
Nahihiya ako sa tuwing
May ibong lumilipad...
Ako na namumuhunan
Nang pagod at salapi
Para lamang makalipad.
Nahihiya ako sa tuwing
May langgam na nagsisikap...
Ako na malaki nga
Subalit kaydaling igupo
Nang paghihirap.
Nahihiya ako sa tuwing
Hahalik ang paru-paro
Sa mga bulaklak...
Ako na walang kasuyo
Kundi mapait na alak.
Nahihiya ako sa tuwing
Sisikat ang araw...
Ako na ang buhay
Ay isang mahabang
Gabing kay panglaw.
Nahihiya ako sa tuwing
Babagsak ang ulan...
Ako na ang luha
Ipunin man ay hindi
Bubuhay ng halaman.
Nahihiya ako sa tuwing
Magsasayaw ang apoy...
Ako na sa puso
Ay walang init
Na dumadaloy.
Nahihiya ako sa tuwing
Maaalalang may Diyos...
Ako na tao lamang
Subalit minamahal
kumunoy, lumangoy-langoy
at sumipol
ng pagkatamis-tamis
ngumiti siya
iniabot ang kamay
at nag-slide sa bahaghari
na ipinangako ni manong
sa mga hudyo
noong humupa ang baha
tuloy tayo,
isinama sa himpapawid
at yumakap sa ulap
humalik sa hamog
at nakipag-bonding sa ulan
walang muwang
sa mga kamatayan
at mga pagsilang
na sabay-sabay sumasayaw
sa lupa
ayaw nang bumaha
kapit-kamay sa pangarap
na pagaspas patungong
langit.

BEATLES & ERASERHEADS: A Thirty-Year Parallel in Music History
- By Gilbert Obal
Two iconic bands, separated by time and geography, yet connected by a fascinating web of parallels: The Beatles, universally hailed as Earth's greatest band, and the Eraserheads, the Philippines' most beloved musical act. Their journeys, though distinct, echo each other in remarkable ways across three decades.
The Visionaries:
* John Lennon (Oct. 9, 1940) - The Enigmatic Genius of The Beatles: Credited as a founder and the creative soul of the band, Lennon possessed an iconic and often rebellious persona few rockers have matched. He was a gifted songwriter, dabbled in fiction, shared a love for Elvis Presley, and laid down the rhythm on his guitar.
* Ely Buendia (Nov. 2, 1970) - The Enigmatic Genius of The Eraserheads: Similarly seen as the driving force and a founding member of the Eraserheads, Buendia exuded a unique charisma and intellectual depth. He too explored fiction writing, likely appreciated Elvis's influence, and anchored the band with his rhythm guitar.
The Charismatic Counterparts:
* Paul McCartney - The Charismatic Pop Icon: McCartney's musical versatility allowed him to constantly reinvent his sound, venturing across genres. His collaborative spirit and engaging presence in interviews made him a natural frontman. Notably, he was the original bassist for The Beatles.
* Raimund Marasigan - The Charismatic Pop Icon: Mirroring McCartney's adaptability, Marasigan has consistently explored diverse musical territories and readily collaborated with other artists. His articulate and engaging interviews have also made him a prominent figure. He held the original bassist role for the Eraserheads before realizing he was a better drummer.
The Quietly Witty Souls:
* George Harrison - The Spiritual Quiet Beatle: Harrison was known for his understated presence and sharp, often deadpan humor, which subtly enriched Beatles' interviews and interactions. He was the band's lead guitarist and a burgeoning spiritual seeker.
* Marcus Adoro - The Spiritual Quiet Head: Adoro shared Harrison's penchant for black deadpan humor, often delivering unexpected and witty remarks in interviews, adding a unique flavor to the Eraserheads' dynamic. He was the lead guitarist for the band and later explored Eastern philosophies.
The Approachable Anchors:
* Ringo Starr - Everybody's Bosom Buddy: Starr projected a friendly, non-rockstar aura, making him the seemingly most accessible member of the Beatles. His collaborative spirit extended to numerous projects with other musicians. He was the steady, human element alongside his "super brothers" and the band's drummer.
* Buddy Zabala - Everybody's Bosom Buddy: Zabala mirrored Starr's approachable and amiable personality, often seen as the friendly face of the Eraserheads. He too has collaborated with various artists and provided a grounded presence alongside his more controversial bandmates. He was the original drummer for the group before settling for the bass.
Parallel Trajectories:
* 1963: The Beatles released their debut album, "Please Please Me."
* 1993: The Eraserheads release their groundbreaking first album, "Ultraelectromagneticpop!"
* 1964: The Beatles achieved global superstardom.
* 1994: The Eraserheads conquer the Philippine music scene.
* The Beatles' legal ties officially dissolved via a telegram.
*The Eraserheads' core partnership ended through a text message.
* John Lennon famously described the Beatles' breakup as a "DIVORCE."
* Ely Buendia characterized the Eraserheads' separation as a "GRADUATION."
Intriguing Album Bookends:
* It's a striking coincidence that The Beatles' first album and what is widely considered The Eraserheads' last studio album both begin with the word "Please":
* "Please Please Me" (1963)
* "Please Transpose" (2003, with Kris Gorra Dancel)
The Shadow of External Influence (Debated):
* While often debated, some Beatles historians (incorrectly) pointed to Yoko Ono (Lennon's wife) as a contributing factor to the band's dissolution.
* Similarly, some Eraserheads "historians" (also inaccurately) suggested Diane Ventura (Buendia's then partner) played a role in their breakup.
Post-Breakup Ventures:
* Following the Beatles' split, Lennon formed the Plastic Ono Band.
* Buendia's subsequent prominent band is Pupil (both names starting with "P").
* Paul McCartney formed Wings, featuring his wife on keyboards.
* Raimund Marasigan co-founded Sandwich, with his then partner playing bass.
* George Harrison embraced Eastern religion (Hinduism) and formed the band Traveling Wilburys.
* Marcus Adoro explored Eastern religion (Buddhism) and has a band called Markus Highway (note the thematic connection: traveling...highway).
* Ringo Starr continues to be very approachable and inspirational for the new generation of Beatles Fans.
* Buddy Zabala continues to be very approachable and inspirational for the new generation of Eheads Fans.
Shared Creative DNA:
* All members of both The Beatles and The Eraserheads were accomplished composers and lead singers, each contributing songs to their respective catalogs.
* Later in their careers, both bands often adopted a practice where the songwriter would also take on lead vocal duties for that particular track.
Early Rejections and Triumphant Club Residencies:
* The Beatles faced initial rejection from Liverpool clubs before finding their footing and conquering the seminal Cavern Club.
* The Eraserheads also experienced early setbacks, being turned away from venues like "Mayric's," before ultimately dominating the influential Quezon City club, Club Dredd (both key clubs starting with "C").
Dismissed by Industry Giants:
* The Beatles were famously rejected by Decca Records, who, at the time, were seeking vocal groups and infamously declared, "Guitar bands are on their way out."
* The Eraserheads also faced rejection from the major label RJ Records, who were reportedly looking for an artist in the mold of Andrew E. Raimund Marasigan humorously recalled the event, quipping, "We are not handsome enough and didn't even combed."
Rumors and Realities:
* The Beatles nation. were subject to the elaborate "Paul is Dead" hoax and the subsequent idiotic urban legends.
* The Eraserheads nation faced a distressing rumor of "Ely is Dead." and the idiotic "Pepsiliarium" urban legend.
A Documented Reformation:
* !n 1994, Paul, George, and Ringo reunited to record their documentary, "The Beatles Anthology." Released in 1995, it featured the carrier single "Free As A Bird," which poignantly reunited John Lennon's voice with his three lads from Liverpool. The Beatles were back, and their loyal fans celebrated enthusiastically.
* Similarly, in 2024, The Eraserheads embarked on a world tour, fueling their fans' desire for a permanent reunion. Following the successful premiere of their documentary in 2025, Ely Buendia announced that The Eraserheads were no longer disbanded and would remain reformed until they chose to break up again. The Eraserheads were back, and their loyal fans celebrated enthusiastically.
HAIL TO THE BEATLES!
